Very-Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) constellations are underway from two major players in the satellite business. Elon Musk’s Space-X Starlink now has 297 operational satellites with more planned. Richard Branson’s OneWeb has currently deployed 40 satellites, also with more planned. These systems could provide internet service where none exists, and where the cost and quality of existing services are problematic. VLEO constellations offer much lower latency than previously available internet services.
The phrase “Trust, but verify” comes from a Russian proverb, made popular by President Ronald Reagan in negotiations with the former Soviet Union. I have found it helpful to recall in many trust decisions.
We try to use technology that has been vetted by trusted authorities, and password techniques that keep our data secure. Our technology trust decisions cause us to rely on others, whether they design, build, sell or manage systems and devices we use. Trade-offs exist between our desire for security and convenience.
As you make your trust decisions, it is helpful to revisit those choices to test whether they have proven to be trustworthy and deserving of your continued trust going forward. That’s what I had in mind when I named this site. Trust, but verify, over and over again.
