The phrase “Trust, but verify” comes from a Russian proverb, made popular by President Ronald Reagan in negotiations with the former Soviet Union. I have found it helpful to recall in many trust decisions. We try to use technology that has been vetted by trusted authorities, and password techniques that keep our data secure. Our technology trust decisions cause us to rely on others, whether they design, build, sell or manage systems and devices we use. Trade-offs exist between our desire for security and convenience.
